Meet your skin's new BFF!

Green Tea, the classic drink of the Far-East, has long been celebrated for its profound health benefits. We have long known that a few cups a day offers considerable benefits to our overall wellness through rich antioxidants, minerals, and anti-bacterial properties. But you may be surprised to learn that this humble herbal tonic has as many benefits for the skin when applied topically, as it has for the overall wellness when consumed as a drink.

About one-third of the dry weight of each leaf is made up of antioxidant flavonoids called catechins. Catechins are beneficial because they stick to proteins easily and block bacteria from adhering to cell walls. This disrupts bacteria's ability to destroy cells. For the skin, this function offers a gentler approach to fighting against acne. Indeed, research has shown, green-tea extract, when applied topically twice per day can dramatically reduce black-heads and bacterial acne.

The primary antioxidant found in green tea, ECGC (epigallocatechin3-gallate), is found to be 100 times more effective than Vitamin C and 25 times more effective than Vitamin E in reducing oxidative stress by fighting cell damage caused by free-radicals, helping to make a remarkable difference in the formation of age spots and premature wrinkles caused by free radical damage.

Research also suggests that EGCG may inhibit sun-triggered skin cancer, which makes green tea a great addition to daily sun-protection regimen along with a topical sunscreen.

You have heard of tannins in red wine. They are the substances that make your wine taste dry. Green tea also contains tannins.  Tannins are astringent substances that offer mystical anti-inflammatory benefits by shrinking pores and helping your skin get a natural glow. Tannins not only help heal burns and stop inflammation, they also have natural soothing qualities that calm the skin and help relieve itching and swelling in cuts, scrapes, and acne blemishes.

You can also thank Tannins anti-inflammatory benefits for a reduced look of dark circles around the eyes and the elimination of overall under-eye puffiness.

With so many benefits for the complexion, clarity, and tone, it is easy to see why we love green tea so much.  You can find it in our 'Be Luminous Green Tea and Honey Cleanser and Mask':  here.
